Update on Elimu and Maliasili pumps
A few weeks after installation both pumps failed due to breakages of pipes. This has since been rectified and on November 25th 2008 the project was handed over to the villagers. We have heard that water is flowing once again. Richard and I will be visiting Ughandi B during 2009 to check that both pumps continue to work properly. Bryony.

It gives us great pleasure to announce that after three years of intensive fund raising the sub villages of Elimu and Maliasili now have working Wells. After the completion of Elimu last week,Maliasili pump was installed on August 12th and villagers are taking full advantage of the clean water. On behalf of Richard, myself,Abraham and the people of Ughandi B we would like to thank everyone who made this possible. A heartfelt thank you to you all. Bryony.
Work began at the Elimu and Maliasili sites on August 2nd and concrete bases were laid the following day. Some problems arose with breakage of a cylinder and missing parts, but finally the construction of Elimu pump was completed on August 8th. Villagers began collecting water that evening as the sun set. Maliasili site is still awaiting some fittings and should be completed shortly.
Work has begun on installation of hand pumps. This should take roughly a week to complete followed by training of two user groups.
We have received a further £50 in sponsorship money for the Jurassic walk.
£1.633.24
At the end of May 2008 the balance in the Ughandi B account stood at £5.771.11. On May 30th we transfered £4.200 to SUWASA in Singida to enable them to purchase two India Mark Two pumps and train a user group for both wells.
This amount more than doubles any previous monies raised by our yearly walk. Thanks once again to everyone who either took part or sponsored one of the team.
To date we have raised £1100 to buy pumps and train the village user group. This is an amazing amount which surpasses all previous totals. We will now make arrangements to transfer funds and hope to have clean water flowing in Ughandi B very soon. A huge thank you to everyone who contributed,it means everything to the people of Ughandi B.
Richard and myself would like to thank everyone who took part in this years Jurassic Coast walk from West Bexington to Lyme Regis.
Thanks to
WALKERS. Rosanne,Tony,Ben and Emily.Karen,Liz and Arnold.Carlos,Niki and Debbie.Alan and Zoe. Roger,Kirsty and Laura.
BACK UP TEAM. Lyn,Jason and Mel.
Thanks for your company and effort in helping us raise money for Ughandi B,we'll let you know how much we raised soon. Bryony.
The account is looking very healthy once again. The Jurassic coastal walk takes place this Sunday May 4th and we hope to boost funds enough to enable us to finish this project.
We would like to thank Wessex Water for their donation of £2.500. Thanks to this generous donation we are close to our final target for purchasing pumps and training the 'user group'.
We are currently waiting to be up dated on the cost of hand pumps. Our next fund raiser will be the Jurassic Walk.. see events page.
Currently we are raising funds for pumps and our account stands st £1.648.49. We recently received a donation of £500 and another of £50. Any donations however small are greatly welcomed. Cheques can be made payable to Ughandi B Water Project as it has it's own account and sent if you wish to Richard and myself at 6 The Avenue Wincanton Somerset BA9 9HH. Thank you. Bryony.
We received a drilling report from SUWASA (Singida Urban Water & Sewerage Authority)on January 24th conatining data, diagrams and photos of the boreholes drilled at Elimu & Maliasili, sub villages of Ughandi B. Work was completed on January 11th and the water was tested during January 12th/13th. Yield reports were very good,Elimu (near Mhuvi primary school) 1110 litres per hr and Maliasili 3046 litres per hr.Both were found to have safe drinking water at 100m. We are currently looking into the correct pump for each borehole on the reports recommendations and continuing to raise money for these. DRILLING PHOTOS COMING SOON.
Two bore holes were drilled in Ughandi B between January 8th and 10th. Prior to this two attemps were made in December 2007 but failed due to breakdown of equipment and the short rains which made travelling to the village impossible. We are currently waiting for the yield reports and in the meantime will be raising more funds for pumps.
After payment to SUWASA for overseeing of drilling and payment to DDCA,we have now begun to raise money for the purchase of handpumps. Account currently stands at £1.046.61
Our thanks to Joy Hall for organising a chocolate party at the offices of Poole Harbour Commissioners in Poole and donating the commission to Ughandi B Water Project. The amount raised was £16.79 by a group of people who work there. The party took place during their lunch break.
Funds raised from this event now stand at £1.215.
Costings have risen for both drilling and pump installation. This is due to the survey showing a need to drill to a depth of 100m,previous boreholes have been shallow and unsuccessful. Therefore we are in the process of writing up a contract in two stages, stage 1 drilling, stage 2 pump installation and training of attendants. We anticipate stage 1 will cost £15,658.80 which pays for works to be carried out by DDCA,these works being overseen by SUWASA's trained Hydro Geologist. Of course this will not be the final cost of drilling as the exchange rate has to be taken into account. We hope to commence drilling once details of the contract have been finalised and anticipate this will take place around November/December weather permitting.
Further funds will be needed for stage 2 the amount depending on which pumps are appropriate. Afridev pumps suitable up to 60m will cost a further £2.500 approx to buy and install or India Mark 2 pumps up to 100m will cost £4.000 approx. We will know more once we receive the yeild reports.
£15.428.74

A big thank you to Karen who took part in last weekends Woman's Hydro Active Challenge London and got many people to part with their money for Ughandi B. So far she has raised £550 with more pledges coming in. Karen you're a star! Pictures here.
The balance of payment for the survey of Ughandi B village has been made to Sema and the account now stands at £14.102.99. Three tenders have come in for the drilling. Costings are from £13.000-£16.000. The price has risen due to the need for deeper wells, therefore it will be necessary to raise more money to pay for hand pumps and training of 'user group'.
Well we're back guys having successfully surveyed the village and what a trip it was! When I catch my breath you'll get some photos. The account after 60% of the cost being paid to the survey company stood at £14,380.40 So things are looking healthy for next month when we've paid the rest having received their report.Hopefully we'll soon have all tenders in for the drilling.
Last statement before we visit TZ.Some money still to come in from Jurassic walk, but now is the time to start spending!
Our thanks go to Colin Winder Mayor of Wincanton for his donation of £50 from the Mayors' fund.
The walk has raised approximately £500 which is a fantastic sum, thanks to the team.
Our intrepid team,Richard,Roger,Alan and Jane we're joined by Matthew and Kirsty at 8.30am last Sunday. They completed the walk in 8 hours. Weather conditions were cold with a strong headwind and when the mist rolled in off the sea it looked positively primeval. More Jurassic Park than Jurassic Coast! Will let you know how much we raised when we have all the money in.
Bryony.
Thanks to everyone who came, hope it wasn't too difficult. Congrats to 'One Loader Short' the winning team. We raised £70.

Once again our garage and driveway were filled with everything from household goods to England flags. The Mayor of Wincanton Colin Winder braved the easterly wind and parted with some cash and family and friends proudly wore their Ughandi B T-Shirts. Richard and Alan found a novel way to keep warm by pogoing and scootering round the tables. The resulting mayhem could be sent to 'you've been framed' when Richard nearly came a CROPPER! Yes it's all on film lads. Thanks to everyone who helped on the day including Mum and Dad.
